Mean Green have longest win streak of Amanda Stone era
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis team continued its strong stretch of play Sunday, taking down FIU 4-1 to win its fifth consecutive match at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green took down FIU for the first time since the 2019 C-USA Tournament and improved their record to 8-4 while the Panthers fell to 2-4 overall.
"This was a huge program win today," head coach Amanda Stone. "FIU will be in the hunt to defend their conference championship and return to the NCAA Tournament. Those inches we keep pushing to gain are starting to turn into big time progress. I keep saying the same things, but today I'll say it again. This team is playing with so much heart and fight. That's what won today. Pia and Carolina embodied that in doubles coming back from down 5-1 to clinch and we continued to see that from all the courts fighting in singles. The way they believe in each other and keep finding ways to push through tough moments makes me incredibly proud."
The five-match winning streak is the longest in Amanda Stone's tenure as head coach and the win over FIU is the first in Denton since 2013.
The freshman combo of Ujin Batsukh and Giuliana Ciangherotti secured the first win of the doubles matches to start the day, winning at line three 6-4. They moved to 2-2 as a duo on the year.
After FIU took line one doubles 6-3, Pia Petelinsek and Carolina Laydner found themselves down 5-1 early at line two. The duo battled back to get a huge comeback win, grabbing six straight games to win 7-5 and give the Mean Green the doubles point.
In singles play, FIU won the line one singles contest to tie the match, but Batsukh stayed hot on line six winning 7-5, 6-3 picking up her fifth straight win to push the Mean Green lead to 2-1.
Playing at line five, Ciangherotti extended her winning streak to three and took a commanding win 6-0, 7-5 and make the score 3-1.
Moments later, Laydner gave North Texas the win by taking home a 6-4, 6-1 win in straight sets.
Elsewhere in singles play, both Marina Adati and Petelinsek split their first two sets at lines three and four, respectively, before their matches were unfinished.
UNT will return to action Friday, March 6 when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on UAB at 2:00 PM.
