Carolina Laydner takes match-clinching point at line one to seal the road win
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The UNT tennis team continued its surge Friday, defeating UAB 4-3 on the road to extend its winning streak to six matches, the program's longest since 2013.
Carolina Laydner picked up the match-clinching win at line one with a thrilling three-set victory to give the Mean Green the win and push their overall record to 9-4 while UAB dropped to 4-7 overall.
"Today was the definition of a trap game," head coach Amanda Stone said. "Couple that with being on the road against a tough UAB, and I was happy to see us rise to the challenge. In doubles, Giuliana and Ujin were awesome. One thing I'm really proud of is we had UAB on the ropes with a 3-0 lead and we saw them fight back and take a couple sets and points, but we never panicked. We fought all the way through and got the W."
The current string of six consecutive victories is the longest since the Mean Green also won six straight in 2013 en route to the CUSA title and their last appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
In doubles action, the freshman combination of Ujin Batsukh and Pia Petelinsek picked up a 6-4 victory at line three while Marina Adati and Carolina Laydner also grabbed a 6-4 win at line two. It was the sixth time in the last seven matches UNT has won the doubles point.
As attention turned to singles play, Batsukh pushed the North Texas advantage to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory at line six. The true freshman has now won six consecutive singles matches and is 6-1 overall this season.
Moments later, Giuliana Ciangherotti made the score 3-0 in favor of the Mean Green with a 6-2, 6-2 win at line five. The win pushed Ciangherotti's singles streak to four straight victories and put her record at 6-2 on the year.
The Blazers battled back, however, winning three consecutive singles matches at lines two, three and four to tie the match at 3-3.
The then came down to Laydner, who won the first set at line one 6-4 before dropping the second set 4-6 to force a decisive third set. With the score tied 5-5, Laydner won back-to-back games to pick up the huge 7-5 set win and give the Mean Green at 4-3 win.
UNT will look to keep the win streak going Saturday when they take on Tulane in a neutral site matchup in Birmingham at 10:00 AM. With a win, North Texas would have its longest win streak since 2012.
