AUSTIN — The Mean Green track and field program competed against some of the best in the country over the weekend at the Texas Relays and came away with a championship and several new program records.
Junior Ximena Lopez broke the program record and won the gold medal in the women's 10k with a time of 35:06.62 on Thursday night to score the program's lone win of the meet.
Other podium finishes came from seniors Akeel Hanchard and Mackenzie Kuehl got third in the men's and women's javelin throw, respectively, as Hanchard notched a new personal-best throw of 68.22 meters and Kuehl took third with a 48.53-meter throw. Sophomore Olu Williams took third in the men's discus with a throw of 56.93 meters, and senior Derrick Warren finished third in the long jump with a jump of 7.20 meters.
The men's sprint medley relay team of Nehemiah Ray, Warren, Chris Johnson and Chase Lehr broke a 43-year-old program record to finish second in a time of 3:18.02. A pair of other program records fell on Friday, as well, as senior Hendrick Hundl demolished his own program record in the 110-meter hurdles by nearly two-tenths of a second when he ran a 13.60 in prelims and ended up finishing fourth in the final with a 13.84. Sophomore Trezeguet Taylor broke the program record in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.46, which tied the previous mark from 2023, but that mark was wind-aided.
The Mean Green will be back to competition next weekend when they head to College Station for Texas A&M's 44 Farms Invite, which runs Thursday-Saturday.
