UNT Welcomes Prep Guard Marcus Zelee to Denton
DENTON – Mean Green men's basketball signed incoming freshman guard Marcus Zelee to the 2026-27 roster, the program announced on Friday.
Regarded as one of the best two-way prep guards in Texas, Zelee is a 6-foot-3 guard from Austin. As a senior, he helped lead Austin Prep Academy to the Texas Christian Athletic League (TCAL) 5A State Championship finals and was named a first team all-state selection. Zelee averaged 13.5 points and 5.2 assists per game for the Avengers with an average of 3.0 steals in his final prep season.
"We are thrilled to have Marcus wearing Mean Green," head coach Daniyal Robinson said. "One of the top point guards in Texas high school basketball this past year, we are excited about the pedigree that Marcus brings to North Texas. We love his toughness and the confidence he plays with every time he steps on the floor. Marcus can make plays for himself and for others, but what stands out to us most is his competitive spirit and willingness to do whatever the team needs to win. He's exactly the kind of young man we want representing Mean Green Basketball, and we're excited to watch him continue to grow in our program."
Zelee began his varsity prep career as a freshman at Austin Achieve High School where he won District 22-4A Newcomer of the Year and was a first team all-district selection. He played his sophomore and junior seasons at Brentwood Christian School where he collected a pair of all-state team nods from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) along with back-to-back Class 5A District 2 Most Valuable Player awards. In two seasons, Zelee led the Bears to a pair of state semifinals appearances.
247Sports ranked Zelee as the No. 35 overall prospect in Texas for the class of 2026 and the No. 63 point guard in the nation. Originally, he was committed to play for Iowa State before reopening his recruitment in July 2025. Aside from North Texas, Zelee held offers from Cal, Charlotte, LIU, Mississippi State, Northern Illinois and UMass.
