Mean Green Erupt For Nine Goals in Win

DENTON — The UNT soccer team found its offense in a big way on Thursday night at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium with a 9-0 victory over Navarro College on Thursday night in the Mean Green's final tuneup before a road match at rival SMU on Sunday in Dallas.
Payton Annis, Mia Bernard, Mya Mitchell and Claire Niedermeier all tallied braces for the Mean Green, and sophomore defender Lillian Vandiver opened the scoring in the 16th minute, as the Mean Green outshot the Bulldogs 40-3 on the night, with 22 of those 40 shots being on target.
UNT led 3-0 at halftime after a 33rd-minute goal from Annis and a 40th-minute goal from Mitchell took the Mean Green to the break. But the flood gates opened after halftime, and the Mean Green scored early and often in the second half.
Bernard and Annis scored less than a minute apart in the 48th minute before two goals from Niedermeier in the 52nd and 57th minutes. Bernard and Mitchell rounded out the scoring in the 64th and 66th minutes, respectively. Annis, Bernard and Niedermeier also each had an assist, and Emma King also added one.
UNT will travel to SMU on Sunday for a 7 p.m., kickoff, before returning home to Denton next Thursday to take on ULM at 7 p.m.
Per NCAA rules, the contest for the Mean Green is not a countable match. All contests against non-four year programs and junior colleges are not countable. The first official match for UNT will take place on Sunday against SMU.
