Soccer On the Road to Face Alum and Former Assistant

DENTON - The UNT soccer team will take its first true road trip this weekend, as the Mean Green travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to face McNeese, which is led by a familiar face.
First-year Cowgirls coach Alexsis Cable spent the final two years of college career with the Mean Green in 2015 and 2016 before spending the last five seasons on UNT head coach John Hedlund's staff as his top assistant. Now the mentor and protege will meet for the first time as opposing head coaches, with the game set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Mean Green (1-1-0) are coming off a 1-0 win Thursday night over ULM in a physical battle that included eight yellow cards. The Mean Green took the lead in the 61st minute on a Claire Niedermeier goal that was set up by a masterful run at net from Payton Annis, whose shot was deflected onto the foot of Neidermeier by the ULM keeper. UNT is 4-0 all-time against McNeese, including a 4-0 win in Denton last season, but the Cowgirls have jumped out to a 3-0 start this season under Cable.
This will be the second meeting in the series in Lake Charles, with the first coming back in 1997 - a 6-1 UNT win. In the four previous matchups, UNT has outscored McNeese 19-1.
