Volleyball Falls Late to West Virginia

DENTON, Texas – The UNT volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end Friday night as it fell in four sets (23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 12-25) to West Virginia at the UNT Volleyball Center.
North Texas (6-4, 0-0 American) battled the Mountaineers throughout the opening three sets, trading momentum back and forth before WVU ultimately pulled away for good in the fourth. Despite strong contributions from several different players, the Mean Green weren't able to overcome a .292 hitting percentage and 10 service aces by West Virginia.
"We've got to look at the positives from tonight, which there were a lot of," head coach Dave Fleming said. "We've just got to find a way to do them more consistently."
West Virginia struck the first blow of the night thanks to a two-point victory in an opening set that featured nine ties and six lead changes. The second set was all Mean Green, however, as they evened the team score through a commanding period in which they never trailed.
In the third, North Texas appeared to be on the verge of victory when it held a late 22-20 edge, but the Mountaineers rattled off five consecutive points to capture the crucial swing game. West Virginia then carried that momentum into the fourth and secured the match by a score of 25-12.
Outside hitter Lillian Croshaw led the Mean Green and matched her season-high with 11 kills on an impressive .318 hitting percentage. She is hitting .367 over her last four matches, a stretch that includes 40 kills in total. Just behind Croshaw was Jahniya Jackson, who nearly completed a double-double through 10 kills and nine digs.
The Mean Green close the UNT Invitational, as well as their non-conference slate, Saturday at 2 p.m. against East Texas A&M. That match will be available for streaming on ESPN+ as Owen Simpson and Haylie Stum handle broadcast duties.
