Tommy Mainord joined the Mean Green prior to the 2016 season as the inside wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. Ahead of the 2019 season, Mainord was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
During the entirety of Mainord’s tenure in Denton, which began in 2016, the UNT offense has proved itself to be one of the top units in Conference USA and the nation. UNT’s offenses ranked in top three in total offense, top two in pass offense, and top three in scoring in Conference USA for four consecutive seasons from 2017-20.
The Mean Green also led CUSA in rushing in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, both totals that rank among the top 10 in North Texas history.
The 2021 season featured Mainord developing former walk-on Roderic Burns into UNT’s top receiving option. The Houston native finished the season with a team-best 58 receptions, 802 yards and four touchdowns.
In 2020, senior wide receiver Jaelon Darden had an All-America season, earning honors from every major outlet/awards group at either first or second team levels. Darden caught 74 passes for 1,190 yards and 19 touchdowns in just nine games and was named the Conference USA Most Valuable Player. Darden finished his Mean Green career as the all-time program leader in career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
After the season, Darden was selected in the fourth round (No. 129 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Mainord, who spent three seasons at Kentucky from 2013-15, has deep Texas ties having coached at Texas Tech, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Tarleton State.
Mainord brought several years of offensive coaching success to Lexington, including 2010-12 with Texas Tech. In every season in Lubbock, Mainord helped lead Texas Tech to top-10 national rankings in passing offense, top 15 in total offense and top 25 in scoring offense.
The 2011 Red Raider offense finished seventh in passing offense, racking up 4,145 passing yards. Mainord’s squad also performed well in 2010, including Lyle Leong, who ranked second nationally with 19 touchdown catches.
Before his stint in Lubbock, Mainord was named the offensive coordinator at Lamar in Sept. 2008 as the Cardinals’ program began preparation to return to the field in 2010 after being dormant for more than 20 years.
Mainord had a three-year stint at Sam Houston State from 2005-07, spending three seasons as an assistant coach for wide receivers and running backs. In 2007, SHSU ranked 16th in the country in passing offense and 21st in total offense. Following the season, Mainord was promoted to co-offensive coordinator.
Mainord tutored several talented players while with the Bearkats, including D.D. Terry, who rushed for a school-record 1,328 yards. Terry was honored as the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was one of 16 finalists for the Walter Payton Award, which honors the Division I FCS Offensive Player of the Year.
Mainord began his coaching career at his alma mater, spending six seasons at Tarleton State from 1999-2004 where he played baseball before joining the football program as a student assistant coach.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science in 2000 and his master’s degree in education in 2001. Mainord and his wife, Tiffany, have a daughter, Maecee, and a son, Davis.
