Jason Martinez was hired on May 31, 2023.
He serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for the UNT men's basketball and women's volleyball programs.
The New York native came to North Texas after helping lead the Iona Gales to a 27-win season last year, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship, which earned them an automatic bid into the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
While at Iona, Martinez worked with Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino. He helped guide Walter Clayton Jr. to being named the 2023 MAAC Player of the Year and Berrick JeanLouis to the 2023 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Martinez joined a North Texas program as it transitioned to the American Athletic Conference after 10 seasons in Conference USA where they won three league titles since 2020. The American Athletic Conference wasn't new to Martinez as he previously was the strength and conditioning coach for the East Carolina men’s basketball program for two seasons.
Martinez had also previously worked at Wake Forrest with the men’s basketball program as well as Lindenwood where he earned his master’s degree from in 2019. The Saratoga Springs, New York, native earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2017 from Manhattan College.
