Head coach Rodney DeLong announced the hiring of Jamie Allred as pitching coach for North Texas softball on June 13, 2018. She is entering her fifth season as pitching coach of the Mean Green.
In her fourth season, Allred navigated the majority of the schedule with an injury-riddled pitching staff that was limited to two pitchers, transfer LHP Ashley Peters and freshman RHP Skylar Savage. Individually, both players finished top five in strikeouts in Conference USA while combining for 35 wins, the most by a pair of teammates in UNT history.Â
In conference play, North Texas finished top three in wins (17), strikeouts (154), ERA (2.60), opponent batting average (.222), walks allowed (48), and home runs allowed (14). Under Allred's instruction, Peters won two C-USA Pitcher of the Week awards in her first season in Denton and was selected to the conference all-tournament team. Savage was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team and tied for the most saves in the country (7). Both pitchers were honored as second team all-conference selections.
Since joining the program, Allred has led the Mean Green pitching staff to 128 wins in 226 appearances with 1,185 strikeouts, 2.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and .222 opponent batting average. In 2021, her unit captured single-season program records in ERA (1.73), opponent batting average (.187), shutouts (12), saves (9) and strikeouts (457).
Allred has helped mentor Hope Trautwein to career program records of 60 wins and 15 saves with a 2.05 ERA and 8.10 strikeouts per seven innings. Under Allred’s watch, Trautwein earned two First Team All-Conference USA selections, along with C-USA Pitcher of the Year and NFCA All-South Region selection in 2021.
Allred has coached the three most prolific pitching performances in Mean Green history as she watched Trautwein set the single-game program and Conference USA strikeout record. She struck out 21 batters in a 3-0 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 21, 2020 before matching the performance in a 6-2 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 13, 2021. Trautwein then recorded the first ever 21-strikeout perfect game in Division I history against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 11, 2021.
Allred’s coaching career began in 2018 when she joined DeLong’s staff as the pitching coach at Austin Peay. While at Peay, the Governors’ staff ranked 13th in Division I in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.67) and posted the 32nd-best ERA (2.25) in the nation. Led by junior pitcher Morgan Rackel, who earned Third Team All-Region distinction and made program history as the first player to earn NFCA All-Region honors in Austin Peay softball history.
Prior to her coaching career, Allred pitched for two seasons overseas. In 2017 she helped lead the Western Magpies (Auckland, New Zealand) to a National Championship after doing the same thing with the Therwil Flyers (Basel, Switzerland) in 2016.
A four-year letter winner at McNeese, Allred left as the program’s all-time leader with 68 career wins and 16 shutouts along with single-season marks of 27 wins and 10 shutouts, both in 2014. On Dec. 16, 2022, Allred was named to the McNeese Sports Hall of Fame class of 2022. In 2014, she was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Southland, First Team All-Louisiana and Second Team All-South Region after posting a 1.57 ERA with 203 strikeouts. Additionally, she was honored as the sixth student-athlete in program history to earn Academic All-District honors in 2014. During her final season with the Cowgirls in 2016, Allred led the team to a program record 43 victories and helped earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth in six seasons.
Before McNeese, Allred was a four-year letter winner and a two-time district champion at Hallsville high school. She is a two-time all-state selection and was named District 13-4A Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore and named District 14-4A MVP and East Texas Pitcher of the Year as a junior.
The Hallsville, Texas native graduated from McNeese in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
