Britney Brown just wrapped up her third season as the associate head coach of the UNT women’s basketball program. With 15 seasons of Division I coaching experience, Brown is one of the nation’s best leaders, recruiters and defensive minds.
Brown has helped UNT reach new heights since arriving in Denton three seasons ago. North Texas recently completed its third straight 19-win season, a first in program history, and leads the American Conference in both total wins (67) and league wins (39) during that span. It also won a share of the program’s second ever conference championship in 2024 and appeared in back-to-back national postseason tournaments her first two years.
Last season, North Texas went 19-14 and finished in the top four of the American Conference standings for the third year in a row. The Mean Green ranked top three in the league in both scoring offense and defense and set the program record for three-pointers in a season with 181. Brown was also crucial in the development of Aysia Proctor, who increased her scoring average by 9.6 points compared to her previous year at UTSA and earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
A key architect on the defensive end, Brown had the Mean Green defense ranking top five in the American Conference in scoring defense (62.1), opponent field goal percentage (38.7), turnovers forced per game (18.5) and steal per game (8.7). No other team in the league ranked top five in each of those categories.
During the 2024-25 campaign, Brown helped North Texas to is winningest season in history with a 25-9 record and 15-3 mark in league play. Under Brown’s guidance, guards Ereauana Hardaway and Desiree Wooten saw massive improvement, each setting career highs in points per game, rebounds per game, assists, steals and three-point percentage.
The Mean Green returned to the postseason for a second straight year after earning a berth to the WNIT. They defeated UT Arlington, 78-67, in the first round for the program’s first ever victory in the event.
In Brown’s first season on staff, UNT captured a share of its first conference title since 1986 and made an appearance in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament. With a 23-9 record, the Mean Green’s turnaround that season was the third best among all Division I programs. With Brown primarily working with the backcourt, North Texas posted the highest scoring average (74.3) and second most assists (456) in program history. On the other end, the UNT defense held opponents to 27% shooting from behind the arc, which ranked 17th in the nation.
Brown came to North Texas after seven seasons with the TCU women’s basketball program, helping the Horned Frogs to three 20-win campaigns and two appearances in the WNIT semifinals. She was named associate head coach prior to the 2019-20 season after holding associate coach and assistant coach titles beforehand.
In seven seasons at TCU, Brown saw the Horned Frogs win a total of 105 games, including a three-year span from 2018 to 2020 winning at least 22 games each for the first time in program history. That stretch included a 24-11 mark during the 2018-19 campaign, which was just one win shy of matching the program record, and its first national ranking in a decade the previous year.
Brown was instrumental in the growth of several All-Big 12 caliber guards, such as two-time First Team All-Big 12 honoree Lauren Heard, who was the first TCU player to do so in five years. Brown also helped develop Kianna Ray, a 2018 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection and the team leader in assists and steals. Following the 2018-19 season, Heard and Ray both ranked top 15 among all Big 12 players in assists, assist-to-turnover ratio and steals.
In total, nine players earned All-Conference honors during Brown’s time at TCU.
Brown arrived at TCU following one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Nebraska, who qualified for the WNIT that year.
Prior to her stint at Nebraska, Brown spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Tulsa. In her first season there, the Golden Hurricane saw an eight-game improvement in the win column and their best Conference USA finish since 2006. A year later, Tulsa then captured the Conference USA tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Brown also spent two years as an assistant coach at Putnam City High School in her home state of Oklahoma. That experience came after two seasons as the video coordinator for alma mater Oklahoma while working to complete her master’s degree. Her second season on the Sooner staff featured a 32-5 overall record and trip to the 2009 NCAA Women’s Final Four.
Prior to coaching, Brown completed a successful playing career at Oklahoma, where she played in 129 games and totaled 59 starts from 2003-07. Brown’s teams at OU won a total of 100 games, captured five Big 12 regular season or tournament championships and had eight of her teammates reach the WNBA. As a starter her junior year, Brown earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades as the Sooners went 31-5 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The following season, Oklahoma returned to the Sweet 16 having compiled a 28-5 overall record.
A native of Okmulgee, Okla., Brown starred at Norman North High School, where she graduated as the school’s all-time scoring and assists leader.
