Â
During his time with the Zips, Hastings helped Akron libero Taylor Sharrits to a 2020-21 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year award, the first MAC defensive superlative in program history. Under Hastings’ guidance, Sharrits finished a shortened 2020-21 season with a career-high 535 digs, which ranked first in the NCAA regular season in total digs.
Â
Prior to his stop at Akron, Hastings spent five years at West Virginia. He served as the director of volleyball operations for West Virginia from 2017-19, where he held administrative duties such as team travel and video coordination. Hastings spent two years as a graduate assistant with the Mountaineers before his promotion to director of volleyball operations.
Â
Hastings' first taste of college volleyball was in 2011, where he spent the season at Ohio State as the director of operations. Hastings, who worked with current North Texas head coach Andrew Palileo in his one season with the Buckeyes, helped Ohio State reach the Sweet Sixteen in 2011. Just as he did at West Virginia, Hastings handled administrative duties, including travel, co-directing camps and video coordination.
Â
Prior to entering the college ranks, Hastings was the head girls volleyball coach for six seasons at his alma mater – Westerville North High School. In his six years at Westerville North (2008-10, 2012-14), Hastings improved the program’s winning percentage nearly 400 points, increasing it to .602 from .242 the three seasons prior.
Â
During his second stint at Westerville North from 2012-15, Hastings led the Warriors to their first-ever Ohio High School Coaches Association State Top-20 ranking during the 2014-15 season.
Â
Hastings earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio State in 2015. During his time as a student, he served as a student manager for the Buckeyes' women’s basketball team. Later on, Hastings earned his master’s in athletic coaching education from West Virginia in 2017.
