Vernon Cole earned two letters as the Eagles' quarterback, leading the 1959 squad to a 9-1 record, a Missouri Valley Conference championship and a berth in the Sun Bowl.

He was named all-MVC in 1958 and later played professionally in the Canadian Football League.
