UNT clinched its ninth-consecutive series win over Florida Atlantic
DENTON – Mean Green softball recorded a doubleheader sweep on day one of its American Conference series against Florida Atlantic at Lovelace Stadium on Thursday.
North Texas (22-16, 11-3) took a dramatic 5-4 victory in 10 innings over the Owls (25-13, 7-7) as freshman Kaycee Slovak recorded the walk-off RBI single before a 13-4 win in five innings secured the ninth-consecutive series win against FAU.
"We didn't start very [well] in game one or game two," head coach Cody White said. "But … we composed ourselves and just continued to have that fight, like we've had all season, and they believe in it. Our hitters did a fantastic job, and I thought our pitchers were as well."
Anneca Anderson (W, 10-4) shined in the circle in game one as she set a new career high of 10 innings pitched while she added three strikeouts and allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits and four walks with 145 pitches thrown.
Anderson tied for the sixth longest outing in program history at 10 innings and recorded the most since current UNT pitching coach McKenzie (Wagoner) Onyango tossed 11 at Louisiana Tech on March 10, 2023.
In the first game, the Mean Green trailed by three runs after two and a half innings before back-to-back solo home runs from Madison Conley and Elizabeth Moffitt cut the deficit to one.
The Owls pulled back one run in the top of the fifth inning before North Texas tied at 4-4 in the home half of the frame as Ariah Mitchell recorded an RBI single and Conley collected a sacrifice fly.
Anderson shut down the FAU lineup as she retired 15 of the final 18 batters she faced to set up the two-out 10th inning rally as Bradi Harman ripped a double down the left field line before she was lifted for freshman pinch runner Lianna Hull.
On the first pitch Slovak saw, she dropped a single into shallow right field as the speedy Hull raced around third and crossed the plate to secure the victory in Slovak's second career walk-off hit.
In game two, the Mean Green found itself in a similar position as it trailed 2-0 after the top of the first inning before starting pitcher Britney Lewinski (W, 11-8) settled in and retired the next six batters in order while the UNT offense roared to life with 11 runs in the first three innings.
Tied at 2-2 in the second, Conley notched her second home run of the day with a three-run blast before Moffitt capped a six-run third inning with a grand slam to give North Texas an 11-2 lead. Moffitt tied the career program record of three grand slams, originally set by Rebecca Waters (2007-10) on April 17, 2010, at Troy.
The Owls posted two runs in the fourth inning which were quickly erased with a two-run home run from Riley McNemar in the home half of the inning.
Lewinski finished her 10th complete-game victory of the season with three strikeouts over five innings pitched as she allowed four runs on six hits and one walk. Her next victory in the circle will mark No. 25 for her collegiate career.
The Mean Green will play the series finale Friday at noon CT after adjustments from the originally scheduled 6 p.m. CT first pitch due to inclement weather in the forecast. Game three is sold out but fans can get more information about tickets by contacting the Mean Green Ticket Office via email at ticketoffice@unt.edu.
