The Mean Green drop extra-inning marathon as tournament hosts ECU win on walk-off home run
GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNT softball fell 4-2 in nine innings to East Carolina in the American Conference Championship Quarterfinals at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
After trailing 1-0 through the first six innings, North Texas (28-28) tallied two runs in the top of the seventh inning before the Pirates (33-24) tied the game in the home half of the frame. ECU won the game with a walk-off, two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
"Our team showed relentless fight all night and I couldn't be more proud of this group," head coach Cody White said. "Anneca [Anderson] pitched one of her best games of the year, but we just came up short."
Anneca Anderson (L, 12-9) threw a career-high 171 pitches over 8 2/3 innings pitched as she struck out eight batters to match her personal-best mark. She also moved into a tie for the ninth-most strikeouts in UNT career history at 187 while she has accumulated 268 over her three-year collegiate career.
Second round hero Ariah Mitchell tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single before Madison Conley tallied an RBI double for a 2-1 lead. Conley finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, two doubles and two walks.
Conley bested former teammate Kailey Gamble (2024) for the UNT single season walks record with 39 on the season while she tied for the doubles record at 16 with Kelli Schkade (2016) and Mallory Cantler (2008).
The Mean Green stranded 13 runners on base in total, including seven in scoring position and ended the second and ninth innings with the bases loaded.
For the second time in program history, UNT finished the season with 300 runs scored while it finished inside the top five for numerous single-season offensive marks including batting average, hits, home runs, RBI and total bases.
