Ariah Mitchell tallies walk-off RBI single to mark second round win over Roadrunners
The Mean Green (28-27) advanced to the quarterfinals of the American Championship after it overcame a three-run deficit with a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before plating the winning run over the Roadrunners (24-33) with two outs in the seventh.
Sophomore Blayze McNemar opened the seventh inning with a leadoff double before freshman Addie Perry took her place as a pinch runner. The Roadrunners tallied two outs with Perry advancing to third on a groundout to second base to set up Mitchell's heroic RBI single.
Mitchell was the author of the fifth walk-off hit of the season for the Mean Green and first since Kaycee Slovak posted a walk-off single in the 10th inning against Florida Atlantic at Lovelace Stadium on April 2.
The heroics would not have been possible without the game-tying sixth inning which was ignited by a two-run home run from freshman Kaycee Slovak to cut the deficit to 6-5 before Bradi Harman drove in the tying run on an RBI single.
Harman finished 3-for-4, her team-leading fourth game with three or more hits, while McNemar and Taylor Platt each collected two hits apiece.
McNemar's first hit of the day opened the scoring as she blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to mark her second home run of the season.
Britney Lewinski (15-14) earned the win in relief as she tossed the final 2 2/3 innings as she gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts after starter Anneca Anderson spun the opening 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Lewinski made her 39th appearance of the season to tie for the ninth-most in single season program history as she is poised to become the first Mean Green pitcher since 2022 with more than 40 in a season.
North Texas moves on to meet tournament hosts ECU (32-24) in the quarterfinals of the American Conference Championship on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT from Joyner Family Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
