MOBILE, ALABAMA -- North Texas junior forward Marilyn Marin, selected first team all-conference for an unprecedented third straight season, has been named the soccer Player of the Year by the Sun Belt Conference.
Marin, who leads the nation in goals, points and points per game was joined on the first team All-Sun Belt Conference squad by Mean Green teammate Melinda Pina, a sophomore forward.
Marin is the first North Texas soccer player ever to be named Player of the Year. She leads the Sun Belt with 26 goals, 15 assists and 67 points, all single-season school records. Marin recorded five hat tricks during the regular season and had a four-goal performance against Duquesne. She became the school's all-time leader in goals, points, assists and game-winning games this season.
Pina was the team's second leading scorer with eight goals, six assists and 22 points despite missing five games early in the season with a knee injury. This is Pina's first time to be selected to an all-conference team.
North Texas has now had six consecutive seasons in which at least two players have been named first team all-conference and seven straight seasons of having at least two players earning all-conference recognition.
