DENTON (11/7/02) - The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team hosted its first ever meet Thursday, battling TCU in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
While North Texas had a swimmer or diver finish in first or second place in 11 of the 16 events, TCU was able to edge the Mean Green 163-139.
"The nicest thing about our first meet was that we swam well in front of a packed house," said North Texas head coach Mona Nyheim-Canales. "It was a different experience for our athletes, but it was very exciting to look into the stands and see a good crowd supporting the team."
Bethany Pipes led North Texas with two first-place finishes. Pipes captured the 100 and 200-Yard Backstroke titles with times of 1:00.54 and 2:09.63, respectively. At the same time, the Mean Green’s Melissa Whitaker performed well in the diving events. In fact, Whitaker qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the three meter event with a score of 229.65.
