ATLANTA — UNT senior diver Kamryn Wong will make program history on Thursday, as she will be the first Mean Green diver to compete at the NCAA Championships in the 1-meter springboard before she competes on Friday in the 3-meter springboard at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
Wong qualified by finishing seventh in the NCAA Zone D 3-meter final last week in College Station, and also was able to earn a spot in the 1-meter event in Atlanta by finishing in the top-12 and qualifying in another event.
"We're excited for the opportunity to be here and represent UNT on this stage," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "Competing at NCAAs is always an honor, and our focus is to trust our preparation, compete freely, and be at our best when it matters."
While Wong is the first UNT diver to compete at the NCAA Championship, it won't be her first time competing at the sport's pinnacle, as she qualified two years ago when she was a sophomore at Missouri. At that meet, she finished 27th in the 3-meter event and 37th in 1-meter.
UNT head coach Brittany Roth said Wong's success, as well as that of her diving teammates in recent years, shows the strength of the program and where it's headed in the future.
"I'm beyond excited for Kam to compete this week at NCAAs," Roth said. "It will be great to be in Atlanta this week in one of the best facilities in the country. Our team has a history of performing well at Georgia Tech, and for Kam to be competing at the highest level of College Swimming and Diving, it really shows the strength of our diving program that Stephanie O'Callaghan has built. We're all rooting for her, and we can't wait to see her dive."
Wong's events will begin at 11:30 a.m., on both days and can be seen on ESPN+.
