Mean Green Swimming & Diving Takes Fourth At SBC Championships

DENVER, Colo. (2/16/02) The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team scored 581.5 points and finished fourth at the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Championships.
Western Kentucky claimed its second consecutive league title with 849.5 points, while New Mexico State finished second (793), Denver took third (609) and Arkansas-Little Rock finished fifth (42).
North Texas’ Scott Hines was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the meet. Freshman Bethany Pipes was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team after leading the Mean Green with two top-three finishes.
Pipes accounted for a team-best 47 points at the meet, which was the 10th most by any competitor at the meet. Following Pipes and also having strong performances for North Texas, Tiffani Harkrider gathered 41 points and Elizabeth Jennings and Charity Dillow each accumulated 38 points. All four total’s were among the top-25 most individually.
Although North Texas didn’t win first place in any event, it came away from the meet with 12 top-five finishes and 33 top-10 finishes. Among 20 events, the Mean Green set school records in eight of them and posted season best times or scores in 13 events.
North Texas set school-record times in four relay events, including the 400-yard medley relay (4:07.93), 200-yard medley relay (1:51.35), 800-yard freestyle relay (7:53.20) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:38.92).
Pipes set school-record times in three events, finishing among the top-five in all three. She finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.64), third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.93) and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.33). Harkrider claimed fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 53.70.
