Mean Green Overpower Ragin' Cajuns in 3-1 Victory

DENTON (10/24/03) -- North Texas stayed in the hunt for the Sun Belt Conference's regular-season soccer title with a dominating 3-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
The victory improved the Mean Green to 4-1-1 in league play and 11-5-1 overall. The Ragin' Cajuns dropped to 2-3 in Sun Belt action and 6-9-1 for the year.
Two unassisted goals by senior forward Marilyn Marin set the pace as she notched her 15th and 16th goals of the season. Her first goal gave NT an earlier lead at the 18:35 mark and she later scored at 55:19 of the second period. Freshman forward Kristen Campbell supplied the other North Texas score at 22:26 in the first half with the third goal of her collegiate career.
North Texas posted a 2-0 advantage in the opening half and Marin's second goal, coming on a blast from about 25 yards out in front of the net, widened the Mean Green lead to 3-0 before UL Lafayette's Sherryl Owens controlled a header assist from Lindsay Webb and scored at the 75:31 mark in the second half.
North Texas kept the action in UL Lafayette's end of the field most of the night, attacking with 35 shots to the Cajuns' seven. Marin led the way with 12 shots while Melinda Pina got off five and Andrea Marak had four. The Mean Green also dominated with a 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Mean Green goalkeeper Briana Buchanan came up two saves in the game while UL Lafayette's Anna Brannon finished with nine saves.
North Texas will play its final home game of the 2003 season on Sunday when it hosts South Alabama in a 1:00 p.m. game at the Mean Green Soccer Complex next to Peterbilt factory.
