Mean Green Soccer Wins Conference Opener 6-1 Over ASU

DENTON (10/3/03) -- The North Texas women’s soccer team (8-3, 1-0) picked up a 6-1 victory over Arkansas State (4-6, 0-1) Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex in both teams Sun Belt Conference opener.
Marilyn Marin recorded two goals to pace the North Texas attack, which saw five different players score at least one goal. North Texas attempted 14 shots on goal, while holding the Lady Indians to just four shots.
Melinda Pina scored on a pass from Misty Cordon six minutes into the game to get the Mean Green on the scoreboard first. North Texas extended its lead to 2-0 off a goal from Marin at the 22:14 mark before ASU’s Melanie Thiele scored to bring the Lady Indians back within one with 13 minutes to play in the opening half. However, North Texas went on to build a 4-1 halftime lead on goals from Andrea Marak and Melissa Chapman.
The Mean Green shutout ASU in the final 45 minutes and tacked on two more goals from Alyssa Carrier and Marin. North Texas goalkeeper Briana Buchanan finished with three saves and Kristen Campbell and Richelle Magalhaes each had one assist.
North Texas will host Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday at 1 p.m.
