DENTON (10/5/03) -- North Texas built a 3-0 halftime lead and held off Arkansas-Little Rock in the final half to post a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference women's soccer match at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
The win completed a successful conference-opening weekend for the Mean Green, who improved to 9-3 overall and stand 2-0 in Sun Belt play. North Texas opened conference play at home on Friday with a 6-1 win over Arkansas State.
North Texas now prepares for a Friday home match against Denver, last year's defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Mean Green Soccer Complex at the Peterbilt factory.
North Texas wasted little time jumping on the Trojans on Sunday7, with Richelle Magalhaes drilling the Mean Green's first goal into the right corner of the net just 1:33 into the game. North Texas then added to its lead by scoring two more first-half goals within a 57-second span when Marilyn Marin and Melinda Pina scored to give the Mean Green it's 3-0 cushion at halftime.
At the 30:23 mark, Marin scored her 13th goal of the season on an assist from Pina. Moments later at 31:21, Pina connected for her team-leading 15th goal of the year off a header assist from Michelle Partain.
UALR's goal came at the 69:12 mark in the second half and was scored by Dee Dee Beyhan.
North Texas dominated offensively with a 24-4 edge in shots and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.
