NACOGDOCHES, Tex. (9/10/03)-- The North Texas women's soccer team had their two-game winning streak snapped by Stephen F. Austin 4-2 on the road at Homer Bryce Stadium. The loss by North Texas ends the 18-game winning streak over teams from the Southland Conference and drops the Mean Green to 3-2 on the season.
"We just missed several opportunities in front of the net tonight," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We made some mistakes on defense that we don't normally make and you can't do that on the road. That's what cost us the game".
North Texas fired a season-high 31 shots, the most since the 2001 season, and got the early 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when senior forward Marilyn Marin scored her third goal of the season off a corner kick. The goal by Marin extends her point streak to five games on the season.
The Ladyjacks answered with a goal by Kim Gray in the 34th minute to tie the score at 1-1 and end goalkeeper Briana Buchanan's shutout streak at 214 minutes. The Ladyjacks opened up the second half with a flurry, scoring two goals in a span of 1:09. The first came on a penalty shot by Christie Mestayer and the second was netted by Sophia Pantazis to make it 3-1.
North Texas continued the pressure in the second half and cut the lead to 3-2 when true freshman Kristen Campbell scored her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute. The Mean Green were never able to even the score and Pantazis iced the game with her second goal of the night in the 66th minute to make it 4-2.
Junior forward Melinda Pina ended the night with a career-high seven shots on goal but had her four-game point streak come to an end. Buchanan tied a season-high with seven saves on the night.
North Texas returns home to the Mean Green Soccer Complex with a match against Texas Tech on September 14 at 1 p.m.
