DENTON (9/14/03)-- Junior forward Melinda Pina scored her sixth goal of the season and junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan recorded her fourth shutout of the year to lead the North Texas women's soccer team past Texas Tech 1-0 at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
Pina provided North Texas with all the offense they needed in the 31st minute when she beat Texas Tech goalie Megan Knauss on the left side from 15 yards out. Pina's goal was her third game-winning goal of the season.
"I'm glad to get the win but we are still struggling to put teams away right now," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We just have to be more patient in front of the net. The goals are going to come, once we get a few it will be a domino affect".
Buchanan made five saves on the afternoon to become the first goalkeeper in North Texas history to record four shutouts in the first six games of the season. The shutout lowers Buchanan's goals against average to 1.31 for the year.
"I loved the way we played on defense today near the end," Hedlund said. "We corrected a lot of the mistakes from the previous game and I was very pleased".
Senior forward Marilyn Marin saw her six-game point streak come to an end as she was held pointless despite firing four shots on goal. The win for North Texas moves their record to 18-1 at home since 1999.
The Mean Green continue their four-game homestand on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Drury.
