DENTON ( 3/5/04 ) The North Texas women’s tennis team (9-4) suffered just its second loss in its last seven outings on Friday, dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 66 Denver in a Sun Belt Conference match at Denton Country Club.
Holly Lee and Megan Schmulbach earned the Mean Green’s only victory in doubles play with an 8-5 flight-three victory over Marisa Mechem and Crystal Knysh as the Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The North Texas duo improved to 8-1 this season in doubles matches.
Denver controlled the rest of the match, picking up the first five singles victories before NT’s Ingrid Stockinger won flight six over Beth Messaros by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Stockinger won her 11th match of the season, which ties Megan Schmulbach for the most on the team. Schmulbach had a two-match winning streak snapped with a flight-five setback.
The match was the first of three matches on consecutive days for the Mean Green. North Texas continues play Saturday at No. 53 SMU in a 3:30 p.m. match.
