Mean Green Tennis Wraps Up Play At Sun Belt Championships

MOBILE, Ala. (4/24/04) The North Texas women’s tennis team (15-12) dropped its final two matches at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, falling 5-0 to No. 3 Middle Tennessee in its early match and 4-3 to No. 9 New Mexico State in its final outing.
The Mean Green opened the second day of play at the tournament with an 8 a.m. match against nationally-ranked Middle Tennessee in the fifth-place consolation bracket. The setback against the Lady Raiders put North Texas in the seventh-place match with New Mexico State. North Texas finished the tournament in eighth place with a 1-3 record, its lone victory coming over Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round.
The Mean Green finishes the season with 15 victories, the program’s most since the 1986-87 team won 15 matches as well.
Following an upset-loss to Arkansas-Little Rock in the quarterfinals, the Lady Raiders were able to come back and pin the Mean Green with a 5-0 setback and advance to the tournament’s fifth-place match on Sunday.
North Texas fought New Mexico State to the end, but the Aggies were able to overcome a 2-0 deficit to win the match. The Mean Green won the doubles point and the first singles point of the match, but NMSU rolled off the next three points to take a 3-2 advantage with just two matches remaining.
NT’s Megan Schmulbach won flight four to make the score 3-3, but NMSU’s Sandra Mayr won a 4-6. 6-3, 6-3 decision in flight five to end the match.
