WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - North Texas senior Zach Atkinson began his quest to make the NCAA Championship with an opening round of 77 in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional from the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex-Kampen Course. Atkinson is fourth out of the six individuals players in the competition and 60th overall.
"I think he was able to come out and make some shots early on and give himself a chance," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "This is a difficult course and Zach came out today with the mindset of competing against some of the best golfers in the nation and he did".
Atkinson started strong with a birdie on the first hole but closed with three bogeys to make the turn at two-over par 38 after the first nine holes. Atkinson second birdie of the day came on his 10th hole but he followed that up with two consecutive bogeys. Atkinson closed out his round with a bogey to finish at five-over par. Only 10 players out of the field of 141 were able to shoot under-par scores in the first round due to the difficult conditions.
