Maier Finishes Third at American Conference Championship

SARASOTA, Fla. – Freshman Mitchell Maier completed his breakout week at the American Conference Championship on Wednesday, shooting a 2-under 70 to tie for third place.
Following back-to-back rounds of 67 on Monday and Tuesday, Maier finished just two strokes back of the lead with a combined score of 204. That total matched Tucker Allen's 2024 performance for the best 54-hole score at a conference tournament in program history and was the highest league finish by a Mean Green freshman since Vicente Marzilio topped the Conference USA in 2021.
Maier made 16 birdies throughout the week, good for second most in the field, and shot under par in all three rounds for the first time this season. With his top-three result, Maier also automatically secured a spot on the American's All-Conference Team, giving UNT a freshman honoree in consecutive years.
As a team, North Texas compiled its best round of the tournament, a 6-under 282, to take sixth place. Charlotte ran away with the team title, besting runner-up Memphis by 17 strokes at 48-under.
Blake Keen continued his steady ascent up the leaderboard Wednesday, carding a 70 to finish just outside the top 20. A consistent postseason performer, Keen has now shot under par in five of his six career rounds at the American Championship.
Meanwhile, Kalle Svederman and Alex Huang both contributed 1-under rounds to land in ties for 29th and 32nd, respectively. Rafael Estrada rounded out the group with a 1-over 73, a four-stroke improvement from his 77 on Tuesday.
