HOUSTON (9/26/04) Three second half goals by the Rice Owls were too much for the North Texas women’s soccer team to overcome as Rice picked up a 4-0 win at the Rice Soccer Complex. North Texas (5-3) has now lost two games in a row for the first time this season.
“The biggest thing that hurt us today was the humidity. I had to pull a lot of starters out because of that and it really wore us down,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “The only bright spot for us today was that I was able to play my entire roster and that is going to help us going into conference play”.
Rice (7-1-2) took the early 1-0 lead on a goal from Angela Aaker in the 27th minute. Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made a season-high six saves in the first half and was relieved by freshman Kandice Ellis in the second half who made two saves.
The game remained close until the final 15 minutes when Rice scored three goals to pull away from the Mean Green. Clory Martin scored in the 74th minute to make it 2-0 and then Ashley Anderson and Maria Fadool scored in the 84th and 86th minute to ice the game for the Owls.
Rice out shot North Texas 17-9 and freshman Heather Hutyra led the way with three shots on goal for the Mean Green.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, September 26 as they begin Sun Belt Conference play at Arkansas State.
