Mean Green Inks Pair Of Standout Recruits

DENTON, Tex. (11/10/04) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team, coming off a successful fall season, signed Lynley Wasson of Tempe, Ariz., and Samantha Moreton of Winchester, England, to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
Just three days after wrapping up play in its final fall tournament of 2004, Mean Green head coach Dawna Prevette announced the signing of the two key additions that will play a part in the tennis program’s growing success. Not only has North Texas registered double figure wins each of the last three seasons for the first time in school history, it also won its most matches in 2004 since 1985 and is in the process of building a new multi-court facility.
Both Wasson and Moreton bring an outstanding history of excellence on the court, a number of tennis accomplishments and are highly touted. Wasson is ranked No. 70 in the nation among high school players and Moreton participated in a national tournament in Wimbledon after being named the best player in her county.
Wasson is also ranked No. 1 in singles and doubles in the Southwest Section. Out of Corona del Sol High School, she is a two-time Arizona 5A state singles champion and went undefeated in both 2003 and 2004 with a combined record of 62-0. As a freshman, Wasson posted a 29-2 record.
"Lynley is one of the most willing athletes I’ve had the opportunity to meet," said Prevette. "She is an amazing fighter and loves the challenge of improving her game. Lynley is extremely consistent and she plays very smart. Her determination and work ethic will make her a big asset to our team next year."
Among Wasson’s honors are the Arizona Republic Player of the Year (2004), two-time East Valley Tribune Player of the Year, three-time Central Region Player of the Year, USTA Phoenix Outstanding Junior Player of the Year (2003-04), three-time Tempe All-City Athlete and three-time varsity team MVP.
Moreton started playing tennis when she was seven and was picked for Hampshire county, one of 36 in England, and has continued to play for the county in each age group. Moreton attends Kings School and was the team captain for both tennis and basketball. She has been awarded the Sportswoman of Year two times at the school.
"Sammie is a great athlete," said Prevette. "She has a huge weapon in her forehand and likes to come to the net, so she should be an immediate contributor in doubles. I think the fact that she is graduating one year early to come over and play says alot about her desire. She always gives 100 percent in everything she attempts."
