Mean Green Soccer Hosts Denver In Key Conference Game Tonight

DENTON (10/21/05) - The North Texas soccer team plays conference rival Denver tonight at the Mean Green Soccer Complex in a game between the two top teams in the Sun Belt. The Mean Green will also be honoring three seniors who are playing in their last home game at North Texas.
Seniors Briana Buchanan, Misty Cordon and Andrea Marak will be playing in their final home game of their careers at North Texas.
The games with Denver have been fierce as North Texas trails the overall series 3-5-1. North Texas is 2-0-1 against Denver at home and the last meeting in Denton in 2003 resulted in North Texas knocking off the then 20th-ranked Pioneers 3-2 in overtime. The last game between the two teams came in the 2004 SBC Tournament semifinals with North Texas winning 3-0.
The North Texas 13-game unbeaten streak has established a new school record and is now the third longest unbeaten streak in the nation. Only the top two teams in the nation, No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Portland have longer unbeaten streaks at 15 games. During the streak the Mean Green has outscored its opponents 40-8, had six shutouts, and won seven of the 13 games by two goals or more.
North Texas has started to receive national recognition as for the first time in school history the Mean Green received a national ranking from topdrawersoccer.com. The inital ranking had North Texas as the 40th ranked team in nation, but the Mean Green has climbed to 36th in the latest poll. North Texas is also receiving votes in the latest Soccer Buzz Central Region poll.
While North Texas as a team is being recognize nationally, the individual rankings will find Heather Hutyra and Kandice Ellis near the top. Hutyra is fourth in the nation with 16 goals, fifth in goals per game at 1.14, and sixth in points per game at 2.64. Meanwhile goalkeeper Kandice Ellis has moved up to eighth in the nation in save percentage at .895 and 14th in the nation in goals against average at 0.55. As a team, the Mean Green is the 18th highest scoring squad averaging 2.73 goals a game.
North Texas has a perfect mark of 8-0-1 at home this season and will be going after its fourth unbeaten season in school history in the home finale against Denver. North Texas is 11-0-2 in their last 13 home games and since the start of the 2000 season the Mean Green has a record of 45-2-4 at home.
