Sun Belt Conference Champions Sign Six Players

DENTON University of North Texas head soccer coach John Hedlund has announced the signing of six players to national letters of intent. The Mean Green has added forwards Kelli Lunsford and Brittney Cleveland, midfielders Veronica Ayala and Gennifer Hurst, along with defenders Amanda Johnson and Amanda Mitchell.

“These six players along with the eight strong walk-ons we were able to add to our roster for next fall makes this definitely our largest, and deepest recruiting class since I’ve been here,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “This class has a lot of speed and several players that are very versatile in which they can play many positions on the field at a very high level”.

Veronica Ayala, Midfielder, DeSoto, Texas (DeSoto High School)

Ayala was named to the 7-5A first-team all-district in 2003-04. She was also named to the all-area team in 2003-04. Ayala earned second-team all-district honors in 2001.

Brittany Cleveland, Forward, Highland Village, Texas (Marcus High School)

Cleveland was named 2004 first-team all district and was named the district player of the year by Varsity Speed Magazine. In 2003 she led her team in scoring and was named to the district 7-5A Forward of the Year. Cleveland was also named to the second team all-area team in 2003 along with being named to the all-region team in Class 5A. In 2002, Cleveland was a member of the all-freshman team as a forward.

Amanda Johnson, Defender, Arlington, Texas (Martin High School)

Johnson was named the 2003-04 Defensive Player of the Year in district 6-5A. She earned first team all-district honors in 2003-04 and was named to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Super Team. Johnson was also named to the 2003-04 all-area team her junior season.

Kelli Lunsford, Midfielder, Highland Village, Texas (Marcus High School)

Lunsford was named to the first team all-state tournament team in the 2003-04 season. She earned first team all-district honors her junior season and was first team all-region. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram named her to the Northeast Area first team last season and she was also named to the all Denton County first team in 2003-04.

Amanda Mitchell, Defender, Lubbock, Texas, (Monterey High School)
