DENTON (2/23/05) North Texas sophomore Katherine Harris was named the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday after going undefeated in singles and doubles play last week to help lead the Mean Green to road victories over Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State.
Harris paired up with teammate Krysta Lee to win the top doubles flight in both matches and run their record to 7-2 in the No. 1 flight during spring play and into double figures overall at 11-5. With 14 matches remaining during the regular season, the duo’s 11 victories are already the sixth most in school history by a No. 1 doubles team in a single season.
The Coppell, Texas, native played in the No. 2 singles flight for the first time this season and won in straight sets against SFA’s Laura Harrison. Harris came back to win flight three against Sam Houston State in straight sets as well and now has a team-high 16 wins overall. She also improved to 7-2 in spring play and her seven wins are a team best as well.
The Mean Green is off to a 7-2 start for the second consecutive season and after completing a five-match road swing, is set to host two matches on Sunday at the Goldfield Tennis Center in Denton. North Texas will play its first Sun Belt Conference match of the season against No. 62 Florida International at 9:30 a.m. and then play Abilene Christian at 2:30 p.m.
The Golden Panthers will be the third nationally ranked opponent North Texas has faced this season.
