Mean Green Tennis Wins Season Opener Over Texas State

DENTON (2/4/05) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over Texas State on Friday at Goldfield Tennis Center in its 2005 season opener.
The Mean Green won its first match of the season for the seventh consecutive year and improved to 4-0 under head coach Dawna Prevette in season openers. NT kicked off a three-match homestand that concludes tomorrow with matches against UT-San Antonio and NCTC.
"I felt like we gave it our all and was pleased with our effort," said Prevette. "We were a little rusty, but I thought we played well for the first match of the season. Hopefully this will not only set the tone for the rest of this weekend, but also for the entire season."
North Texas swept all three matches in doubles action and picked up four victories in singles competition. Three Mean Green players won their doubles and singles matches.
Including the doubles point, North Texas jumped out to a 4-0 advantage to clinch the match with three flights still in play. Kelli Royer, Megan Schmulbach, Katherine Harris and Aziza Aba Butain all won their singles matches in straight sets and NT won two of the three doubles flights by five points.
Aba Butain and Schmulbach paired up to win the third flight in doubles play and Harris teamed up with Krysta Lee to take the top flight. Holly Lee and Ashley Sammis won flight two by an 8-3 score.
The Mean Green will play UTSA tomorrow at 10 a.m. and follow the match with a 2 p.m. outing against NCTC.
