DENTON (3/20/05) -- While North Texas’ Katherine Harris and Krysta Lee teamed up to knock off the 39th ranked doubles team in the country, their win was overshadowed by a 5-2 setback to Middle Tennessee on Sunday in a Sun Belt Conference women’s tennis match at Goldfield Tennis Center.
North Texas saw its record drop to 10-7, while the Lady Raiders improved to 6-10. The match marked the Mean Green’s first loss of the season to an unranked opponent. The Mean Green wasn’t far away from reversing the outcome, dropping two flights in a full three sets.
Led by Harris and Lee, NT continued its strong doubles play as it won the first point for the 11th time this season. The Mean Green’s top doubles team knocked off Jenny Klaschka and Ann-Kristin Siljestrom by an 8-4 score to tie their 16 wins from last season, which are the third most in school history by a No. 1 duo. Kelli Royer and Ashley Sammis won flight two 8-1 over Anna Maria Cibils and Emily Vest.
Kelli Royer was responsible for NT’s only victory in singles action, defeating Claudia Szabo (6-2, 7-5) in flight two. Royer evened her record in the flight to 6-6 by snapping a three-match skid.
North Texas is now 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference matches and still has two more league opponents left on its schedule before the conference tournament. North Texas will host UTEP on Saturday at 1 p.m. in its next outing.
