DENTON (4/8/05) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team (12-8) swept doubles competition and won four of six singles matches to grab a 5-2 victory over Arkansas State (6-9) Friday at Goldfield Tennis Center and complete a regular-season sweep of the Lady Indians.
The Mean Green evened its Sun Belt Conference record at 3-3 and improved to 6-3 in home matches. The victory marked NT’s ninth win of the season by at least three points.
After dropping the doubles point for just the seventh time all season its last time out, the Mean Green rebounded by sweeping all three flights by at least three points against the Lady Indians. Krysta Lee and Katherine Harris won their team-best 17th match, which is the third most victories in school history by a No. 1 doubles team.
"I was really pleased with our doubles play," said North Texas head coach Dawna Prevette. "Last week we had a little let down, so I was very proud of they way they came back and stepped up. I thought we were ready to go entering the match and besides a few mistakes, played pretty well."
North Texas didn’t let up in singles play, getting wins from Kelli Royer, Harris, Megan Schmulbach and Ashley Sammis. Katherine Harris won flight three to pick up her 19th win of the season, tying Ingrid Stockinger for the most on the team. Kelli Royer continued her strong play, winning her fourth straight match in the second flight. All four Mean Green victories were in straight sets, while its two setbacks went a full three.
North Texas will host New Mexico State on Sunday at 10 a.m. in its final Sun Belt Conference match of the regular season.
