Mean Green Fall In Season Opener 2-0

EL PASO, Tex. (8/26/05) In a battle between two NCAA soccer tournament teams from last year, Eastern Illinois came out on top of North Texas 2-0 in the regular season opener for both teams at the Miner Classic. The loss by the Mean Green (0-1) is only the second time in the past five years that North Texas has lost its regular season opener.

The Panthers (1-0) scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 26^th minute of the first half when Sharyne Cornell was able to score off a rebound. Mean Green goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made the initial save, but Cornell was able to score on the rebound and give Eastern Illinois a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers maintained their 1-0 lead into the break and were able to extend that cushion to 2-0 in the 54^th minute. Kathleen Hayes scored off a shot eight yards out in the North Texas box to make it 2-0 Eastern Illinois.

North Texas mounted several offensive chances, firing 11 shots, led by freshman Kelli Lunsford who had five shots. Lunsford had two shots on goal, while Kristin Campbell and Heather Hutyra had one shot on goal apiece.

Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Tiffany Groene made four saves on the afternoon to pick up the shutout. Buchanan made two saves on the afternoon for North Texas.

North Texas returns to action tomorrow to face the host school, UTEP, in the second game of the Miner Classic.
