DENTON (2/10/06) - The energy level at North Texas is picking up as the winter season winds down and the spring sports are just getting started. The Mean Green basketball teams, track teams and the softball and tennis teams are all on the road this weekend.
Both the men's and women's basketball teams will compete in a doubleheader against the Western Kentucky teams on Saturday
afternoon. The men and women will finish their conference seasons on the road in the next two weeks. The last basketball home game will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with the men hosting UT-Pan American at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green track and field teams will head to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic on Friday and Saturday. North Texas was originally slated to run in Fayetteville, Ark. at the Tyson Indoor Classic. Last season, Osaze Aghedo set a new school record in the 60-meter dash of 7.57 at the Tyson Indoor. That mark didn’t even last a year, as Rachael Runnels broke it twice at the JD Martin Invitational last weekend.
Deidra Wesley’s feats in the pentathlon last Friday were some of the best in school history. The senior nearly clipped her own pentathlon record with 3,668 points, and in doing so, raised the school’s indoor high jump record to 5-08.75. Wesley’s jump, the highest in the Sun Belt Conference this season, gives the senior the fourth school record on her resume (indoor & outdoor high jumps, pentathlon and heptathlon).
The softball team is opening up its 2006 season at the Domino's Pizza Softball Tournament, hosted by
The tennis team caps its seven-match road trip with two this weekend. On Saturday, the Mean Green faces Texas State and then will compete against UT-San Antonio on Sunday at 10:30 am. NT won its first match of the spring season last weekend against UT-El Paso. The team also picked up a victory against Idaho.
The Mean Green will play its first home spring match at the new Waranch Pavilion on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 2 pm against Arkansas-Little Rock.
