DENTON (2/16/06) -- Arkansas-Little Rock spoiled North Texas’ home opener and first ever match at the Waranch Tennis Pavilion, edging the Mean Green by a 4-3 score on Thursday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference women’s tennis match.
The Mean Green dropped its second consecutive match and fell to 3-5 on the year, while the Trojans won their ninth consecutive match to improve to 9-1 on the season. The 4-3 score is the closest match that UALR has played during its extended winning streak. The match was also the Mean Green’s first Sun Belt Conference outing of the year.
The match was decided by the doubles point as the two teams split the six single’s flights. Five of the six singles flights were won in straight sets, while UALR’s two doubles victories came by three points or less in the tightly contested match. The setback marked the third time this year that the Mean Green has fallen by just one point.
Aziza Aba Butain and Lynley Wasson teamed up to claim NT’s lone doubles victory, winning flight two by an 8-5 score. Wasson went undefeated on the day, also knocking off Jenna Hirdle in straight sets at the No. 1 spot in singles. Sammie Moreton and Sara Giles picked up the other two singles wins for the Mean Green in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Giles won her team-high sixth match in spring play and has now won her last four matches.
The Mean Green will play its next match at Las Colinas Country Club’s indoor facility on Saturday at 3 p.m. due to the threat of rain.
