Mean Green Tennis Finishes Weekend Road Trip With Split

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (2/5/06) The North Texas women’s tennis team (2-3) snapped a two-match skid with a dominating 6-1 victory over Idaho on Sunday to finish a four-match road swing through New Mexico with a 2-2 record against three WAC schools and one Conference USA team.

Three of the four teams the Mean Green faced were ranked nationally as recently as 2002 and both setbacks were decided by a narrow 4-3 score. NT defeated UTEP, ranked nationally in 2002, on Friday and then dropped two one-point decisions against New Mexico State and Utah State on Saturday. The Aggies were last nationally ranked in 2003 and are 5-1 on the season.

Idaho was nationally ranked in 2004, but North Texas had little trouble with Vandals as it won the doubles points and won five singles matches for its largest margin of victory this year.

Five of the six North Texas players that saw action over the four matches finished with a .500 record or better in singles play, including Ina Wieding and Sara Giles with 3-1 marks. Freshman Lynley Wasson won two of three matches in the top singles flight.

The Mean Green won the doubles point against UTEP, New Mexico State and Idaho and has now won the doubles point in three of five matches on the year.

North Texas remains on the road for its next match, facing Texas State on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Mean Green will close out a seven-match road stretch to start the season on Sunday at UT-San Antonio.
