DENTON (4/18/06) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team will begin play at the 2006 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Championships in Mobile, Alabama, on Friday when it plays Middle Tennessee at 9 a.m. in the tournament’s opening round.
The Mean Green will enter the three-day tournament as the No. 9 seed among the 10-team field that includes five nationally ranked teams. The winner of North Texas’ match against Middle Tennessee will face No. 1 Florida International at 3:30 p.m. on the same day.
"Middle Tennessee is a very tough team," said North Texas head coach Dawna Prevette. "Some of their results compared to ours are pretty similar. We want to enter the tournament as healthy as possible and we’re just going to take it one match at a time."
The Mean Green finished the regular season with a 5-17 record that included five setbacks against nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Raiders are currently 7-14 overall, but finished the regular season by dropping eight of their final nine matches.
North Texas has four players that have won at least 10 matches this season, including freshman Lynley Wasson with a team-best 14 victories to her credit. Junior Megan Schmulbach follows with 13 wins, while sophomore’s Aziza Aba Butain and Sara Giles have 12 and 11, respectively.
Head coach Dawna Prevette currently has 64 victories, the second most in school history. She needs just nine more to tie A.G. Longoria as the school’s all-time leader in victories among head coaches.
