Mean Green Tennis Wins Sun Belt Tournament Opener

MOBILE, Ala. (4/21/06) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team (6-17) won the doubles point and picked up three victories in singles action to defeat Middle Tennessee (7-15) 4-2 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday.
The Mean Green entered the tournament as the No. 9 seed, while the Blue Raiders were the No. 8 seed. North Texas fell to Middle Tennessee in the first round of last year’s SBC Championships. With the victory, the Mean Green snapped a two-match skid to even its record at 2-2 over its last four matches.
Ina Wieding and Megan Schmulbach led North Texas in the first round, both going undefeated in both singles and doubles play. Both Wieding and Schmulbach won their singles matches in straight sets and competed with different teammates in doubles to help the Mean Green win two of the three flights.
Freshman Lynley Wasson picked up a flight one victory to run her record at the top spot to 5-4 on the season. Wieding improved to 4-1 when competing in the second flight. Schmulbach won her 14th match of the season, just one win shy of Wasson’s team-best 15 victories.
Schmulbach and Sammie Moreton won flight one in doubles action, while Wieding and Aziza Aba Butain won flight two.
The Mean Green were scheduled to play No. 1 Florida International, ranked 42nd in the nation, on Friday at 3:30 p.m., but afternoon play was suspended due to heavy rainfall. North Texas will now play the Golden Panthers on Saturday at 10 a.m.
