Hedlund Announces 2006 Soccer Schedule

DENTON (5/22/06) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2006 soccer schedule, which is highlighted by 10 home games at the new Mean Green Village Soccer Stadium. The Mean Green will begin the year at home with two exhibition games, first against Oklahoma on Friday, Aug. 18 and then a scrimmage against the Alumni on Sunday, Aug. 20.

The Mean Green begin the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Texas State.

North Texas faces perhaps its most difficult schedule with five games against NCAA Tournament teams from 2005. The non-conference schedule is highlighted by two home games against Houston on Aug. 31, and SMU on Sept. 3.

Since the 2000 season, North Texas has been nearly unbeatable at home, compiling a record of 46-2-4 which includes an unbeaten streak of 14 games heading into this year.

North Texas then hits the road for two matches against nationally ranked teams from last year starting at Nebraska on Sept. 8. The Mean Green then faces USC two days later in Lincoln, Neb. on Sept. 10.

The Mean Green will also host Texas Woman’s University and Northwestern State before closing out the non-conference schedule with a visit to Grambling State.

The Mean Green will begin defense of its Sun Belt Conference Championship on September 22 with a road game against league newcomer Louisiana-Monroe. North Texas will also host league newcomer Florida Atlantic.

North Texas ends the regular season with a game against its fiercest conference rival, Denver, on Oct. 27. North Texas has six league home games and five road matches this year.

The 2006 Sun Belt Conference Tournament will take place Nov. 1-4 in Lafayette, La.

North Texas is coming off its best season in school history by advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and returns all 11 starters from last year’s team.
