Welch Named To The Academic All-District Team

DENTON (5/25/06) Sophomore golfer Austin Welch was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Welch, an accounting major, is the first North Texas men’s golfer to be named to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district team. Welch was on the University of North Texas President's List for 2004 and 2005 and a member of the North Texas All-Academic Team in 2005.

Welch was named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List for the 2004-05 academic year which is awarded to students with a 3.5-3.99 GPA.

He posted a team-low stroke averaged of 73.7 in 10 tournaments and was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team. Welch won the UALR First Tee Collegiate with a 4-under par score of 212 and finished in third place at the Sun Belt Conference Championship.

To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. District VI represents student-athletes in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
