DENTON (8/31/06) - North Texas faces the Houston Cougars in the 2006 home opener tonight at 7 pm at the North Texas Soccer Field. The Mean Green is coming off a 2-1 win over Texas State to begin the 2006 season. The Cougars are 2-0 after wins over Louisiana-Lafayette and Baylor to begin the season. North Texas has a big week at home as after squaring off with Houston, the Mean Green will entertain metroplex rival SMU on Sunday.
North Texas owns a record of 5-1-1 against the Cougars all-time. Last season, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Houston. The Mean Green has a perfect record of 3-0 at home against Houston. The last time the two teams met in Denton, in 2004, it was a 5-1 rout by the Mean Green. North Texas has outscored Houston 12-1 in the three games played at home.
North Texas has never lost a home opener in the programs 11-year history. The Mean Green is 11-0 and has outscored its opponents 48-6 in the 11 games. Houston has been opponent twice. North Texas has scored four or more goals in six of the 11 games.
True freshman Kendall Juett scored the game-winning goal against Texas State in her first collegiate game. She joins a very elite club as only one other player in North Texas history has scored the game-winning goal in their first ever-collegiate game. True freshman Marilyn Marin scored the first of her 88 career goals in the 2000 season opener, not bad company for Juett to be in.
North Texas has won six previous season opening games, which has translated into success for the rest of the season. The Mean Green has averaged 14 wins a season when being victorious in the first game of the season.
There will be an admittance fee for soccer, volleyball and softball games this season. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children.
