Denton (2/13/07) Texas natives Allison Chermel and Shannon MacKenzie have inked their intent to join the North Texas tennis program for the 2007-2008 season.
“We are very happy Allie and Shannon have decided to join out tennis program this fall,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “They are terrific people, outstanding students and solid tennis players. Both of them have excelled in singles play but what separates them in their doubles play. They compliment the class we signed in the fall.”
Chermel, a native of Frisco, Texas has been ranked as high as No. 28 in Texas for superchamp doubles play and is continually ranked in the top 50 in the state of Texas in girls 18 and under. She has played No.1 singles and doubles since her freshman year and has been first team all district every year. Chermel is a volunteer for the Special Olympics and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.
“Allie is an athlete with an all court game,” said Lama. “Her signature shot is her back hand. She is an explosive player ready to take her game to new heights.”
MacKenzie is the captain of the tennis team at Allen High School. She was named Female Player of the Year as a freshman and a sophomore. During her junior year, she was the district champion in spring doubles and took second in regionals. She placed third in the state and received the Eagle Heart Award. She was first team all district in flight one doubles her junior year, and has been second team all district in singles for two years. MacKenzie is also in the top 20 percent of her class.
“Shannon is a speedster and is an aggressive counter puncher,” said Lama. “She is a tenacious competitor and is very strong physically and mentally.”
Chermel and MacKenzie join Narinne Kazarova, Amy Joubert and Madura Ranganathan who signed during the fall signing period.
