Mean Green Aim For Conference Championship In Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. At Disney World, avoiding Mickey Mouse and Goofy is not something that one would look to do. For the North Texas men’s and women’s golf teams, that’s another story. Their quest for a conference championship begins on Monday as the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship take place on April 16-18 from Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

The men’s side will compete on Disney’s Magnolia Course, home to Disney’s PGA Tour Event in November, while the women will tee it up from Disney’s Eagle Pines golf course on Monday.

North Texas enters the championship playing some of its best golf of the season. The Mean Green men shot a season-low round of 279 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. North Texas is looking for redemption after losing in a three-way playoff last season at the SBC Championship.

Led by junior’s Anthony Broussard, Cole Howard, and Austin Welch, the Mean Green is confident about capturing the school’s 27^th conference title. Howard leads the team with a stroke average of 73.72.

“I feel like we are playing some good golf right now and I like our chances,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “If we can make some more shots like we have been we have a chance to do something special”.

On the women’s side, the Mean Green has faced a rebuilding project this season, with four freshmen and one senior leading the way. Tara Lambright has been the most consistent player but freshman Janna Golden has surged towards the end of the season. The Mean Green finished in second place last season and will be aiming for the school’s first conference title.

Denver’s women will be looking for their fourth straight league title while Western Kentucky University will be looking to repeat as the men’s team champions.

12 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams will be vying for the automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Golf Regional.

The first round of the championship will tee off Monday, April 16, with the second round taking place Tuesday and the final round Wednesday morning.
