North Texas After National Respect With Weekend In Oklahoma

DENTON, Tex. (9/21/07) For years the North Texas women’s soccer team has been regarded as one of the best in the region, now its time for another level of respect. The Mean Green carries a perfect record of 6-0 into a weekend showdown with Oklahoma on Friday night and then Long Beach State on Sunday morning in the Sooner Invitational.

North Texas is off to the best start in school history at 6-0 and is one of only four teams in the nation that are unbeaten and untied.

North Texas first faces off with the Sooners on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. North Texas owns a perfect mark against Oklahoma all-time at 3-0. The two teams haven’t met since the 1998 season. The Mean Green won the only meeting in Norman against OU, 1-0 in 1997. North Texas is gunning for its 12th win against a Big XII school.

The Sooners will have to contend with a potent North Texas offense heading into the match.

North Texas is second in the nation in offense, averaging 4.17 goals a contest. The Mean Green has numerous players in the top 10 in the nation in multiple categories.

Junior Brittany Cleveland is fourth in the nation in goals with seven and sixth in the country in points per game, averaging 2.50 a contest. Freshman Janaye Woods is 10th in the nation with 2.33 points a game and Kendall Juett is 15th at 2.17 a game.

The matchup against Long Beach State is a meeting with an old Big West foe. The two teams met twice while conference mates in 1998 and 1999, splitting the two games.

The Mean Green checks in at 14th in the Central Region while Oklahoma is ranked 15th. Long Beach State is ranked 12th in the West Region. The Mean Green with the 49ers takes place on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Norman, Okla.
