Swimming And Diving Falls Short Against New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (1/8/08) Coming off arguably one of its best meets so far this year at the UNLV Invite, the Mean Green swim team couldn’t muster up a repeat performance Tuesday night.

The University of North Texas dropped a 143-98 dual-meet decision to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M. The Mean Green is now 1-7 in dual-meets this season.

“I wasn’t expecting to swim fast because we’ve been training so hard lately, but I’m very disappointed that we have yet this season found a way to perform when conditions aren’t ideal,” said North Texas coach Joe Dykstra. “We have to get more mentally tougher as the season goes on.”

Following her four-record performance at UNLV, Alicia Hale continued where she left off breaking her own school record in the 1,000 free. Hale, a sophomore from Schertz, Texas, finished first with a time of 10:34.18. Following the five second deduction because of Las Cruces’ elevation, Hale’s time was over two seconds faster than her previous record she set last year. Hale also took home first place in the other two individual meets she competed in; the 400 IM and 500 free.

Whitney Tyrone picked up career bests in both the one and three-meter dive. Tyrone, a sophomore from Pflugerville, Texas, finished second in the three-meter dive with a six-dive total of 205.27; five points higher than her previous career best.

The Mean Green will next play host to the University of Houston, Friday, Jan. 18. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
